Train Movements, Not Muscles: A Smarter Approach to Athletic Development

Modern training culture often focuses on isolated muscles - quads, hamstrings, biceps—leading to programmes built around split routines and body ‑ part days. While this approach is effective for bodybuilding, where hypertrophy is the goal (4, 10, 12), athletes need something different . Sport is not organised around muscles; it is organised around movements, environments, and interactions . To truly improve performance, resilience, and adaptability, training must shift from building individual muscles to developing the whole movement system .

Core Stability Isn’t Trained — It Emerges

Terms like core stability , core strength , core endurance , and functional training are everywhere in fitness, rehabilitation, and performance environments. The prevailing belief is simple: train the core → improve stability → reduce injury → enhance performance . It sounds perfectly logical. But before we decide whether it’s effective, we must ask a much more fundamental question: What exactly do we mean by "core" and "stability"?

Rethinking Plyometrics

Rethinking Plyometrics and the SSC Cycle in Youth Athletes Acceleration, sprinting, jumping, and rapid changes of direction are essential athletic qualities across youth sports. These abilities are often explained through the stretch ‑ shortening cycle (SSC) — a concept suggesting that elastic energy storage and reflex mechanisms enhance force production. While widely accepted, this traditional view may oversimplify the reality of how young athletes develop reactive and explosive movement capabilities. Instead of treating the SSC as a strict mechanism that can be isolated and trained directly, it may be more accurate to view it as an emergent behaviour — something that naturally arises when an athlete interacts with fast, dynamic tasks [12].

Before Sport, Build the Athlete

Why General Physical Preparation Matters for Young Athletes Youth sport provides huge opportunities for development — from technical skill acquisition to teamwork, communication, and leadership. Encouraging participation is unquestionably valuable. But one question is often overlooked: Are young athletes physically prepared for the demands their sport places on them? Emerging research shows concerning trends in general physical readiness, rising overuse injuries, and increasing early specialisation. Together, these suggest a mismatch between exposure and preparation — raising important implications for long-term health, performance, and enjoyment.
